Hybrid surgery - HeRO is performed.
HeRO.
HeRO is a hybrid surgery
performed for dialysis patients who can no longer have
dialysis access created in their arms.
When receiving hemodialysis, generally,
a vascular access is created to quickly circulate blood from the artery to the heart,
You can usually create vascular access twice on each arm, for a total of about four times.
In a situation where the number of vascular accesses that can be created in the arms is limited
after living with hemodialysis for a long time,
you may reach a point where no more vascular access can be created in the arms.
At times like this, the surgery that creates the dialysis access
that goes from the arm through the neck and into the heart is HeRO.
A graft is connected to the artery,
and that graft and the HeRO graft are
joined below the clavicle to make the blood circulate directly toward the heart,
in this hybrid surgery.
In vascular surgery, the inflow path on the arterial side,
and in radiology, the outflow path from the neck to the vein are created.
When there are no more vessels to use in the arms,
until now, patients had to live with a semi-permanent dialysis catheter
but with HeRO surgery, they get another chance to create dialysis access.
Only about 20 cases have been performed in Korea,
and in the Cheonan-Asan region, it was performed for the first time, including at university hospitals.
